It's baby-time again. Rachel Elizabeth Vardaman was born on Nov. 12 (Scorpio girls unite!) She weighed in at a healthy 7 lbs. 2 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Matt's Homecoming

(Before you jump to any conclusions, I want to say I don't know when Matt is coming home. It's roughly another 3 months! It's also very likely I won't know until a few days/hours within his arrival due to the nature of the Navy/Army)

Hey everyone,
I don't usually post here, but I think this is a good idea because I need everyone's help and I don't necessarily want Matt to know! Since neither Matt nor I have experienced deployment before, I am looking for some suggestions to help make things easy for his big welcome home. Well, I guess I'm jumping ahead of myself since I don't know when he is coming home, but it's soon!!!!! I have been looking for answers on the web, but haven't had much luck. It's all a bit emotional and overwhelming, so I really would appreciate all the help I can get. I have some questions... not sure where to get answers...

Do I throw him a welcome home party immediately?
Who should greet him at the airport? How many people?
Should I wait a while before throwing a party? How long do I wait?
What kind of party do I throw? Alcohol? No? Loud music?
Formal party, or casual, laid back? Lunch or dinner?
What do we talk about? Can I ask about his experience in Iraq?
Is it okay to talk about Iraq?
Any welcome home banner at the house? Inside or outside?
Will it be too overwhelming for him? For me?
Should I decorate the house? The garden outside?
I don't know what to expect!
Am I forgetting anything?

Hi! My name is Dave and I like game development more than any profession in the whole wide world. I express myself in various ways, from writing stories and poetries, to making games. The enjoyment and laughter brings me back the energy to keep myself alive.

Anyway, I figure I join Warner Bros., a company once known for its unconstrained creativity through cinematic and animation, expressing truth and values without the sugarcoating of censorship and conformism. I came with much enthusiasm and unlimited energy, ready to help bring a smile to a world that needs it so much. But instead, I find myself in the dank remnants of a corporation that was once a pillar of integrity. Instead, I find myself in a place, awash of colors but of black and white. An amalgamation of mild people bereft of dreams. Reality hits me with a speeding 10-ton full metal truck, possibly traveling beyond the speed of a hundred miles per hour.

However, in the dark corridors of lameness and shattered hopes, I have found myself with a few bright industrious individuals who put much effort and devotions to their trade, exploited by the lackluster overlords who are completely devoid of passion. I can only implore them to find a more deserving environment before they too become the very monsters who enslave them.

As much as I wanted to stay in the comforts of this imprisoning cubicle, I must continue my journey to the rugged, battered road. I may face certain perils, perhaps from the intergalactic space invaders who feast on human brains or psychopath worshipers of the dead dragon carcass. I have it good, cool and I'm grateful, but destiny begs me to move on. And in my tattered sack of a heart filled with booze, pom-pons and marinated Popsicle sticks, I will hold the goodness that I've found here.

I could probably explain why I never liked this company in a million different ways, but let's just say it's not my cup of tea. All you have to do is look at the number of people who decided to free themselves from the life sucking, creativity crushing, and money hoarding Warner Bros. (A company who succeeds in failure, exceeding expectations in mediocrity, if not disappointment, which seem to only make money by sacking people.)

I have a lot to say, but I'll leave that to you, those who have the ability to expound their whines better than I do. I have not the patience to deliberate the facts and debate; the impossible deprogramming of the plantation owner, their workers and their slaves.

And that concludes my 1 and 5/6 years at Warner Bros.

So to express my feelings, I can only show you this:

Special Message From Cindy & Gaby:

So... Here’s the thing: we’ve given it 5 months, but Busta really isn’t cool with Wiley being the new guy in the house. That’s right – this house just ain’t big enough for the both of ‘em, and well, we’re keeping Wiley. :-) We’re very sad to let our catboy go, but we really have to. :-(

At present, Busta is an outdoor kitty – as of 2 days ago. He’s got all his shots, he’s been chipped for identification, should he ever get lost. He’s a great cat, extremely loving, but very jealous of the baby. We could keep him here as an outdoor kitty, but he really wants to be inside. The ideal situation for him: a place where HE is top cat, numero uno, where he gets all the love and attention, can go out for a few hours, and then stay inside where he can do what he does best: SLEEP. Well, sleep and EAT – he thoroughly enjoys his chow. He’s a super lap kitty and loves to chat. He’s twelve years old and in great health (just saw the vet 2 weeks ago). He enjoys catnip toys, pina coladas and getting caught in the rain – well, scratch the rain part. :-D

If you or anyone you know could provide a good home for Busta, please give us a shout.

Some of you may know, some of you may not, but Friday, March 31st was my last day at WBOL. It was a great run but after 6 years it was time for me to get on up out of there.

My new gig will be at AG Interactive (a division of American Greetings) where I'll be an Art Director. The company is based in Cleveland but there's a small office here in West L.A. which is where I'll be holed up at. I'll get the opportunity to not only design but oversee the creation of sites, wireless content, print marketing, and content for instant messenger apps. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot for me to learn and it's obviously challenging but I'm up for it and psyched to be taking that next step.

Glad to see everyone still is staying busy!

As for me, I've been extremely busy with my movie (getting close to finishing principal photography, and then comes 3 months of editing), but I also finally got a permanent job about 3 1/2 weeks ago!

I am now an Office Manager at a trailer company called mOcean in West LA... not far from our friends Albert Bugoff and Lisette Osterloh! It's a great opportunity and they already like me, it looks like my time at Online will help immensely, as they are relying on me to do some IT stuff as well. It also gives me a chance to watch some of the editors here, and later in the summer do some color correction on my film--very nice perks to have! Definitely a far cry from working 4 years with Khalid!

But through it all, I still occasionally think of all the friends still toiling away at WBOL or elsewhere, and I miss all you guys a lot!

So, having sent out probably 50 resumes, responding to job postings that in all honesty I was mostly only PARTIALLY qualified for due to my having been moved around so damned much during my tenure at WBOL, I was starting to get really depressed. Totally unmotivated, on Wednesday I retreated to the one thing that makes me happy... or at least keeps me from focusing on my depression... being a board whore. :-) While making my rounds, I went over to WebOverdrive.com, an adult webmaster resource board that's run by the company where one of my dearest friends (Jessica from PrimalX.com) works.

In fact, Megan says she'd like me to court the gay site webmasters both on the boards and in person, which is fine by me! I know a bunch of them anyway, and they have great parties. :-)

You all know that my heart's always been in the porn industry, so this gig is like a dream come true. I agreed to accept not-so-good pay for the first 30 days until we all feel that everything's going to work out, but after that there's no telling how lucrative this could be. There's no dumbass corporate structure or rules saying you can only be promoted or get a raise after a prescribed period of time. It's pretty much, "If you work hard and kick ass, you'll get promoted and get fat raises... whether that's two years from now or two weeks from now. The sky's the limit."

So there ya go!

The news is out!!!! I put in my two weeks notice at Warner Bros. Online today. I can not believe that I did that! I have been with WB for nearly 7 years; it being my 3rd job out of college. (If you're trying to do the math, just know I'm still 19!) I'm going to sincerely miss all the people that I've met and worked with over the years, but mostly I'm going to miss seeing all the friendly faces every Monday - Friday!!!!

Back to my story, I am going on to greener pastures!!! I'm moving up to a golden opportunity. a BIG PHAT GOLDEN opportunity. The company name is not as important as the "person" I am going to be working for. His name is Ryan Blair - and his picture should be somewhere below in another blog of mine. Those of us still around the office are definitely feeling the empty spaces of what i'd like to call our new "Swiss Cheese" establishment. Many missing faces around here.

I'd like to also congratulate Mr. Berminator himself on his new adventures starting TOMORROW! I hope he will be posting soon to tell you all about his new 11 minute commute. :)

Christmas 2005 - Part 1: New Orleans

My Christmas trip to visit my father, now in Austin, also included a few days in New Orleans, to see for myself the devastation that has befallen my hometown. I have to say that images on television or magazine articles don't fully convey the magnitude of destruction here.

While I've taken some video and photographs, they, like those from CNN, will only give another 2-D visual perspective of what has happened here. It was only when I stood on the streets of my old neighborhoods and looked around at the height of the watermarks on the houses that I really got the true sense of what has occurred. I stopped at a friend's house in Lakeview. For miles, this part of town boasted some very nice upper middle-class homes; now detroyed and uninhabitable. At his house, I had to hold an 8" stick over my head to touch the waterline left by the flood.

The repair is slow to start. There are signs posted at every major intersection which advertise home demolition, contracting, mold removal, etc. There's still no electricity in the hardest hit areas, so most major intersections don't even have red lights, only 4-way stops signs.

There are many other areas that are similar, if not worse. I didn't even try to go into St. Benard Parish, as I had heard that it was off limits to sightseers. We stopped to see an aunt who lives on Magazine St., near Jackson Ave. She had over $50k damage to her roof, but no water damage. Apparently, near the river is higher ground, but as you move across St. Charles Ave., it deepens quickly.

I also didn't venture to Metairie; traffic jams are to be avoided. Traffic also prevented us from driving across the lake to view the area where my uncle's house was completely blown away. We heard that a lot of the local population has temporarily relocated to Covington and St. Tammany, commuting in and out of town via the 24 mile Causeway.

A gleam of sunshine in all of this was on Pine St., near Audubon Park. Not only was the home of my first 8 yrs minimally damaged, but the Audubon Park golf course was open, with a few golfers attempting to put aside their troubles and find comfort in its serenity.

I returned to Austin on Christmas Eve, and have had some time to digest all that I saw. Though there is much to consider, my first conclusion is that it will take a few years for New Orleans to rebound, and I am optimistic that the spirit of those folks can't be broken so easily.

Is it possible to abuse a birthday WEEK? Well, I didn't. But I had a fun birthday on Saturday anyway! I thought I'd share some details with you just incase you got tired of surfing the Internet. John and I started off our day by visiting the Eagle Rock landfill. The reason to that is because we had to haul away some crap from the house, to make way for the subcontractors to do their job properly. Its amazing how much money you can save if you do the work by yourself!

I had a nice lunch with my girlfriends in Silverlake. We spent hours reminiscing about our high school days. It's been 16 years since we last got together! After that, John took me out to a restaurant in Malibu. It was a complete surprise, but many of my friends showed up and I can't even thank Jenn enough for organizing this shindig! Does the funny looking Japanese guy look familiar?

Maintenance in the house

Well, well, well... I haven't looked closely, so maybe I'm the member with the unique distinction of being FIRED rather than quitting or being laid off. Y'know how I've always embraced being the outrageous outsider and all, heh. :-)

I screwed the pooch and they canned my ass because I'd already been given my "last and final warning" for the dead pager debacle a few months ago. That's pretty much the whole thing in a nutshell. I'm not bitter, and in fact I don't really have any strong feelings at all about not having a job.

I'm still alive, and this is definitely not the worst thing that has ever, or will ever, happen to me in my life. I'll survive like I always have... and maybe the next job I have will be something I totally love, or will be at a company or organization that makes a positive difference in people's lives. We'll see!

I love you all - and I'll miss you. Jobs are just jobs; it's the people we work with that make it a joy to show up. Thanks for making my 6 years at WBOL joyful!

Be Careful Out There!!

With the holidays... comes the chaos of people in a hurry.

This was probably due to stupidity rather than holiday rush, but on my way home on Thursday, I saw an ugly accident - and it happen only a few cars away from mine.

As I was merging into the 170 from the 134, I saw a black sedan zooming dangerously fast on the left-most lane. With the cars starting to back up ahead, I figured this idiot didn't have much room to continue their reckless driving - but I was wrong. A few seconds later i saw that same car begin zig-zagging around braking cars... still going extremely fast. (As if he/she was racing, but no one was racing with them!) The next second i saw a car spin and hit the divider... sparks shooting up from the impact... and then that car spun around and darted across 4 lanes of the freeway. The car on the right-most lane couldn't stop in time and hit the spun out car - liquid pouring onto the highway from the front.

Luckily everyone else had slowed down to a crawl as they saw what was happening and only about 4 cars seemed to have gotten involved. I can't tell if the stupid car was one of the 4 cars pulled over... but I sure hope they stopped at least and took responsibility for their actions.

It only takes one Idiot to cause an accident... so just be as careful as you can!

RC here! Thought I'd chime in and let everyone know what's been going on, but there's really not much. I've got a few irons on the fire for employment, but I've not had this much time off in over 20 years, so I'm playing a LOT of golf! :)

In the next few weeks, I'm planning to travel back to New Orleans to check in on friends and family, though to see my dad, I'll have to go to Austin. He's doing fine there, and being so close to my brother there is a brighter side to all that madness.

N.O. is still so much my home, and I'm really drawn to make an effort to help out with its restoration. I don't know exactly what that will entail, but I'm sure I'll have a clearer picture after I've been there and had a chance to see the devastation first-hand.

Until then, I'll keep working on my golf game and do some interviews. Keep this blog alive. I think it's great that we take our friendships with us, after leaving WBOL.

P.S. Last Tuesday, I had a great lunch at the lot with Rachel, Sammy, Roxanne, Morgan, Lisette, Jason, Lauren, and Adam. It felt real good to be around them again. Hopefully, there will be an opportunity to see some of you guys soon, too!

Well, in case some of you hadn't heard, I am no longer at my "new" company. I never thought I'd find a place worse than WBOL, but to my surprise I did! LOL

My Goldfish

Since my time is my own now, I finally found a vet who will treat my goldfish. He/she has a tumor on it's side and they are going to operate and take it off. It is getting really big and yucky! He has a 50/50 chance of surviving so wish it good luck!

You did bring me luck!!!! The vet just called and the fish is OK. I'm going to bring it home now.

It's VCA Wilshire Animal hospital in Santa Monica for any of you who have trouble finding a vet who treats a pet that is not a cat and dog.

Day Two here. Not sure what to say, except I think I'm going through mild withdrawl symptoms. I already miss the folks who have been laid off; especially RC, Joya, Jay, Trish, Clay, Cindy Ann, Dawn and Matt! Boo..

Okay... so this might be a stupid idea, and this blog could turn quite dusty ...

But through the years many folks have come and gone from "WBOL" and it's very easy to lose touch...

Perhaps if a random blog in cyberspace was available... where folks could post about ANYTHING at any time... and share their rants, raves, hot job postings, etc...

Maybe this could end up being the one way we could all keep in touch, no matter where our crazy life paths take us.

SO... I'll turn this over to you guys... i'm going to try to invite as many members to join this blog and see what happens...
